Thailand and South Korea have agreed to boost military cooperation, investment, and soft power exchanges during a visit by Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa to Seoul this week.
The visit from July 31 to August 2 comes at the invitation of South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul. It is the first official visit to the Republic of Korea by Mr. Maris in his capacity as Foreign Minister.
South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo expressed gratitude for Thailand’s historical support during the Korean War and its current backing of South Korea’s policies on the Korean peninsula.
The two countries aim to expand military collaboration in areas such as joint exercises, military education, and weapons production capabilities, according to the Thai foreign minister.
On economic matters, both sides discussed enhancing trade and investment, particularly in the food sector where Thailand has significant potential.
Addressing labor issues, Han praised Thai skilled workers and expressed interest in further cooperation. Maris assured that Thailand is working to resolve outstanding issues, including illegal Thai workers in South Korea.
To facilitate tourism, Thailand plans to implement an Electronic Travel Authorization system by early 2025, which could also help monitor and prevent illegal labor migration.
The countries also explored cooperation in clean energy development, including solar and small-scale nuclear power, aligning with Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s policies.
Cultural exchanges, particularly in the entertainment industry, were highlighted as a key area for future collaboration between the two nations.
Maris visited a special Passport Mobile Service Unit for Thais in ROK co-organised by the Royal Thai Embassy in Seoul and the Department of Consular Affairs during 30 July – 27 September 2024.
The Foreign Minister gave policy guidance to RTE officials on people diplomacy and the need to continuously improve consular services, of which the Ministry will render full support. The Minister also conversed with Thai passport applicants and listened to their inputs in order to make foreign policies more tangible for benefits of the Thai people. (TNA)
