Foreign Ministry confident in Thai representatives’ argument in Phra Viharn case at ICJ

BANGKOK, 14 April 2013 – The Foreign Ministry has expressed confidence in the efficiency of Thailand’s legal representatives in the Phra Viharn case at the World Court. 

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul, on Sunday, spoke of the readiness of the team of legal representatives who will deliver the oral argument, on behalf of Thailand, to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague, the Netherlands.

During April 15-19, Thailand is to join in the ICJ’s proceedings related to Cambodia’s request for the interpretation of its 1962 rulings in the Phra Viharn case.

Mr. Surapong, who has flown to the Netherlands to meet with the Thai representatives, said his latest discussion with the government-appointed working committee and legal advisors has convinced him that Thailand will be ready to defend its case before the ICJ.

The Foreign Minister stated that the Thai representatives have prepared all essential information to present to the ICJ while expressing confidence in their victory.

Mr. Surapong added that the World Court agreed the information in all documents submitted to the court by both Thai and Cambodian governments can be disclosed to the public from April 15.

He reiterated that the public hearings at The Hague will be broadcast live to Thai people through the National Broadcasting Services of Thailand’s NBT TV station and FM 92.5, AM 891 and AM 1575 radio stations as well as the special website www.phraviharn.org until the proceedings end.
