BANGKOK, Thailand – Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Russ Jalichandra has confirmed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs successfully coordinated with Myanmar authorities to facilitate a visit by the Committee on the Armed Forces to four Thai fishermen detained at Kawthaung Prison. Led by committee chairperson Wiroj Lakkhanaadisorn, the visit took place on January 13. The Ministry acted promptly after receiving the request on January 10, instructing the Thai Embassy in Yangon to secure approval, which was granted earlier the same day.

According to Russ, the ministry has been actively supporting the detained fishermen and their families. On December 19, 2024, family members were allowed to visit the prisoners, and another visit was arranged on January 3. During the latter visit, embassy representatives and a family member delivered first-aid supplies and coordinated medical care for the detainees.

Efforts to secure the fishermen’s release are ongoing. Russ stated that the Ministry is collaborating with relevant agencies to ensure their safety and is working on preventative measures to minimize the risk of similar incidents in the future. Regular engagement with Myanmar authorities remains a critical part of the strategy to address this matter effectively.

The vice minister also addressed criticism of the ministry’s handling of such cases, reaffirming its commitment to protecting Thai citizens abroad. He warned against politicizing sensitive issues, as it could disrupt progress and strain international relations. (NNT)
