BANGKOK, 21 October 2011 – The advisor to the Bangkok governor and former Royal Irrigation Department chief has cautioned policy makers in the current administration to allow water into partial inner Bangkok in a bid to prevent further losses brought by the massive floods.
Advisor to the Bangkok governor Pramote Maiklad cautioned that the ongoing flood prevention system of building an embankment to withstand the run-off would eventually fail as the blocked water would soon accumulate and manage to break the flood walls open.
The former Royal Irrigation Department director-general suggested that the best way to alleviate flood problems was to let the water enter the inner part of Bangkok and then divert it to the eastern part of the capital where several canals would drain the run-off into the sea.
Meanwhile, Bangkok Governor M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra has warned the residents in Thung Song Hong, Lak Si, Thung Sikan and Don Muang areas to brace for floods. The water gates at Thawi Wattana and Khlong Song areas have been open to speed up the drainage system.
