BANGKOK, Thailand – Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra made a return visit to Bangkok’s vibrant Chinatown, Yaowarat, on Thursday, marking his first appearance there in 19 years. He received a warm reception from merchants, tourists, and supporters.

Thaksin dined with business associates at his favorite restaurant, “Chinatown Scala,” a venue he frequented before going into self-exile in 2008.

Following the meal, Thaksin strolled along Yaowarat Road, renowned for its street food and shops, where crowds of people requested photographs and handshakes. Some inquired about his sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, also a former prime minister, who remains in exile. Thaksin smiled but did not respond to the questions.

Korkaew Pikulthong, a Member of Parliament from the Pheu Thai Party, an ally of Thaksin, stated that the visit was purely for dining and leisure, with no political discussions taking place.

Thaksin returned to Thailand last year after 15 years of self-imposed exile. He faced corruption charges but was granted parole in February, 2024. (TNA)
