Northern Thailand braces for a drop in temperatures as a new cold air mass moves in, while southern regions remain on alert for heavy rainfall and flash flood risks.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Thai Meteorological Department has announced that starting December 7, a new wave of moderate cold air will cover upper Thailand, while southern regions are advised to brace for continuous rain. From December 13 to 17, another wave of cooler air is expected, bringing increased rainfall and heavy downpours in parts of the southern Gulf coast, heightening risks of flash floods and runoff.

According to Somkorn Tonjan, Director of the Weather Forecast Division, during December 7–10, 2024, a moderate cold air mass will extend across upper Thailand. Initially, eastern and central regions, including Bangkok, may experience cloudy skies with light rain before temperatures drop slightly. The southern region will continue to see light to moderate rain, with moderate winds and waves.

Between December 13–17, an additional cold air mass will arrive, coinciding with easterly winds affecting the lower northeastern, eastern, and central regions, including Bangkok and its vicinity. This pattern will cause initial rainfall, followed by a drop in temperatures. In the southern Gulf coast, rainfall is expected to intensify with localized heavy rain, requiring ongoing vigilance.

The Meteorological Department noted that no signs of tropical cyclones are expected in the next 15 days. However, low-pressure systems may form intermittently over the lower South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand.

As the Christmas season approaches, upper Thailand, including Bangkok, may experience colder weather with temperatures dropping below 20°C. In the upper northern and northeastern regions, some areas may see single-digit temperatures. Residents are advised to prepare for cooler conditions and monitor weather updates closely.

Bangkok and upper Thailand prepare for cooler weather, while the Gulf coast faces intensified downpours this December.
