Doi Inthanon sets a new record at -3.2°C, with shimmering frost blanketing the grass and leaves, drawing thousands of visitors to experience the chill and breathtaking sea of mist.

CHIANG MAI, Thailand –– Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai experienced another temperature drop this morning (January 2), recording a new low of -3.2°C on the grass surface. This marks a historic record, with widespread frost forming on grass and leaves along the roadside.

A new high-pressure system has swept across northern Thailand, causing further temperature drops. Visitors flocked to Doi Inthanon in Chom Thong District early this morning to experience the icy weather. Popular tourist spots were packed with visitors since dawn, leading to heavy traffic. Temperatures plunged to just 2°C, while the grass surface recorded a historic low of -3.2°C, the coldest in several years.

Tourists were thrilled by the freezing conditions, braving the cold in thick winter clothing, with some even wrapping themselves in blankets to fend off the chill. The frost blanketing the grass and leaves was more extensive than usual, creating a stunning winter landscape along the roadsides.

At the Kiew Mae Pan viewpoint, crowds lined the roads to witness a breathtaking sea of mist, appearing thick and fluffy like cotton. Many took photos to capture the beauty of the scene.

On the summit of Doi Inthanon, the highest point recorded a temperature of 5°C. Public transport services were provided near Kiew Mae Pan to shuttle visitors to the summit for a fee of 30 Baht each way, helping to reduce traffic congestion due to the limited parking space.

Today marked the 10th frost occurrence of this winter season. Yesterday (January 1), the national park welcomed 7,274 visitors, including 6,575 Thai nationals and 672 foreigners, all eager to embrace the frigid temperatures. (TNA)
