‘Gathering of Giants’ wins top prize in wildlife photography contest

This award-winning shot captures a stunning moment of wild elephants huddling together at Khao Yai National Park, led by their protective matriarch.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The Wildlife Conservation Office, Thailand has unveiled the winning photograph from the “Precious Animals, Valuable Forests” photography contest for 2024. The stunning image, titled “Gathering of Giants,” captured the top prize in the Mammal Category (General Public Division).

The photograph was taken by Sirivat Thaoburi at Khao Yai National Park, Nakhon Ratchasima Province.


The captivating image showcases a group of wild elephants huddling together while feeding on a mineral lick, seemingly engaged in a deep discussion. Observing them from behind is the “Mae Praek,” a matriarch elephant responsible for leading and protecting the herd.

Many may not be familiar with the term “Mae Praek.” It refers to an experienced and strong female elephant that plays the crucial role of guiding the herd, finding food and water sources, and ensuring their safety. In times of danger, the Mae Praek will fiercely protect her group.

This award-winning image beautifully captures the wonders of Thailand’s wildlife and the deep bonds within elephant herds.
