BANGKOK – Thai officials recently spoke with Indonesian counterparts on the issue of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Gen Chatchai Sarikalya made an unofficial visit to Indonesia, where he discussed the problems surrounding IUU fishing.
In response, Indonesia’s Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti has agreed to attend a later meeting in Thailand, which would establish a joint committee to tackle the issue.
Gen Chatchai also asked Indonesian officials to look into the case of Thai fishermen being detained in Ambon and Benjina islands. Indonesia has agreed to work with the Thai Ambassador to Indonesia on the matter.
