BANGKOK, 14 February 2013 The government has commended the work of intelligence officials after the successful defense of a military base in Narathiwat against an assault by insurgents. The intelligence officials were complemented for their speedy work, which saved the base of Narathiwat Task Force 32. However, the prime minister has told officials to avoid lowering their guard, and to always be prepared against any retaliation by the insurgents.

Police Captain Chalerm Yubamrung, in his capacity as director of the Center for Implementation of Policies and Strategies for Solving Problems in the Southern Border Provinces, ordered the governor of Narathiwat province to quickly rehabilitate and foster understanding with the families of the insurgents killed during the base assault. He also told officials to increase caution and protect against retaliations, especially in risk spots.

Colonel Winthai Suwari, deputy Army spokesperson, revealed that the Army commander-in-chief had made a long-distance call from Australia to offer his moral support to officials involved in the defense against the assault, and also reminded them to always be combat ready. He at the same time offered his condolences to the families of those killed.

Members of the House of Representatives discussed the incident, and lauded the soldiers for their success. The House maintained that the success reflected soldiers’ ability to collaborate with locals in the area. In the meantime, most members of the House still disagreed with the curfew initiative, and asked that the government evaluate the proposal carefully to spare the locals of trouble.
