The government decided to postpone the Chana Industrial Estate project in southern Thailand after conservationists from Chana district of Songkhla rallied at Government House on Phitsanulok Road for five days to oppose the project.
Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon assigned Deputy Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Thamanat Prompow to meet the demonstrators.
Mr Thamanat said demonstrators wanted the project to be postponed and he would propose Gen Prawit form a working group to study solutions to the project. He said he would visit the project site for quick solutions.
Mr Thamanat acknowledged demonstrators’ concern about the Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning’s plan to redefine the project site as an industrial area to pave the way for the project. He said that he asked the department to postpone the plan pending efforts to jointly work out solutions with local residents.
Besides, representatives of the demonstrators were invited to a discussion on the project in Government House. (TNA)
