BANGKOK, 7 November 2015 – General Prayut Chan-o-cha said Thailand is adamant to eradicate illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing (IUU). In the meantime, European Union officials will pay another visit to Thailand to check on the country’s progress in the fishing industry in the middle of next year.
Prime Minister General Prayut said the government is still adamant on eradicating all illegal, unregulated, and unreported fishing activities as well as human trafficking in the fishing industry.
In an attempt to successfully address the IUU problem, he said the cabinet has approved the Fisheries Act as well as a marine resources management plan, both of which are believed to help the country effectively bring solutions to the fishing sector.
In the middle of 2016, EU officials will pay a visit to Thailand to discuss the matter and follow up on Thailand’s progress in its effort to fix all existing problems.
Thailand and the European Union share the same goal of solving IUU fishing in order for the fishing industry to prosper and to eliminate a problem that only a few Thais are involved in, he added.
