BANGKOK, Thailand – Search and rescue operations at the collapsed State Audit Office building in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district have entered a second full day, with efforts intensifying after signs of life were detected in one area of the site early Sunday morning. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt confirmed in the morning (Mar 30) that rescuers remain fully mobilized, supported by international assistance and specialized equipment.
Rescue teams from the United States, China, and Israel have delivered advanced tools to aid Thai personnel working around the clock. The site has been divided into zones to streamline operations. Although additional bodies were recovered on Sunday, the official death toll has yet to be confirmed. Authorities remain hopeful that more survivors may be located beneath the rubble.
Rain remains a concern, with a 60% chance of showers forecast. Blocked drainage systems caused by debris may increase the risk of localized flooding. Clearing efforts are underway to restore water flow and prevent delays. Despite the weather risk, structural stability at the site is being maintained, supported by the building’s steel reinforcements.
Citywide, traffic conditions are gradually improving. The Din Daeng Expressway interchange, where a collapsed crane caused significant disruption, is now 80% cleared. A final decision on reopening the route is expected later on the day. The Yellow Line monorail is scheduled to resume service at noon, while the Pink Line will remain closed until further safety checks are completed. Officials have indicated that work-from-home measures may be introduced if key traffic routes remain affected.
Across Bangkok, over 9,500 damage reports have been submitted via the Traffy Fondue platform. 20 engineering teams will inspect more than 100 buildings. Property owners are required to conduct annual structural inspections and have been urged to comply to ease the pressure on city teams. The government is now finalizing a 200-million-baht relief package to cover rescue operations, victim compensation, and other emergency expenses. (NNT)
