The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has joined hands with PTT Global Chemical Pcl. (GC) to upcycle plastic waste and transform it into walkways.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister, Varawut Silapa-archa said the upcycled walkway development project aims to revamp the area around the pond within the ministry’s premise, covering a distance of 320 meters.

This collaboration aims to highlight the benefits of resource circularity from waste separation to turning plastic waste into valuable resources.

Dr. Kongkrapan Intarajang, CEO and President of GC, disclosed that the Upcycled Walkway Development Project is the result of community-driven design, ensuring a balanced ecological system and functionality. GC’s innovative platform comprehensively manages plastic waste from collection, separation, transportation, to recycling and upcycling.

The project includes a 130-meter-long upcycled road made from a blend of asphalt and used film plastics, a 190-meter upcycled walkway, and an upcycled pond dipping platform.

Plastic waste, while challenging to degrade naturally, have been repurposed to create durable, environmentally-friendly structures, contributing to reduction of more than 4,500 kilograms of plastic waste and greenhouse gas emission equivalent to 4,700 kilograms of carbon dioxide emission, comparable to planting over 495 trees.

The project serves as a stepping stone towards sustainable environmental development. (TNA)
