BANGKOK, May 23 – The Thai government has agreed with a civil society group to sign an accord to deal directly with the problems of the poor and the marginalised.
Announcing the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the People’s Movement for a Just Society (Pmove), an independent civic network to solve the problems of poverty-stricken and underprivileged people nationwide, Deputy Interior Minister Pracha Prasopdee said the group’s earlier proposals were raised in Tuesday’s cabinet meeting during which the prime minister gave a green light to the MoU signing.
He said one Pmove demand–that the government study the environmental impact of the Pak Moon dam–will be on the agenda for the cabinet’s deliberations next Tuesday.
The government will speed up its response to the other demands including the plight of the Moken sea gypsies in Thailand’s South and permission for landless people to temporary make a living on state-owned land, he said.
Government authorities and Pmove representatives will meet at least every two months to follow up on the problems pending.
