Health Dept launches “No Belly Fat” campaign

BANGKOK, 8 May 2014 – The Department of Health is campaigning against obesity, in the hope of enabling all Thais to live a healthy life without the risk of diabetes. 

According to Director General of the Health Department MD Pornthep Siriwanarangsan, more than 2.8 million people die each year from diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension – all of which are caused by overeating and lack of exercise.

The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that by the year 2015, there will be more than 3.3 billion people who are overweight.

As concerns rise, the Health Department has launched a campaign calling on everyone to maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating right, doing exercises, avoid drinking and smoking, and having their physical examination regularly.

He also suggested that Thai men should have a waist circumference of no more than 36 inches, whereas women should have a waist circumference of no more than 30 inches.
