SAMUT SONGKHRAM, Thailand – A local ice cream shop is riding the viral wave of the beloved “Moo Deng” pygmy hippo from Khao Kheow Open Zoo, offering a homemade gelato shaped like the adorable creature for just 69 baht.

Following the global craze for “Moo Deng,” who has captured hearts with its cute and bouncy demeanor in viral social media videos, the “Aroi” shop in Samut Songkhram has created its own tribute by producing a gelato version of the famous pygmy hippo. The ice cream, shaped like a sleeping Moo Deng, comes in chocolate and Ovaltine flavors, and is now available for only 69 baht.

Sitanan Sumangkalasombat, the 41-year-old owner of “Aroi,” shared that the shop previously sold dog- and cat-shaped ice creams, which were very popular. Now, following the Moo Deng trend, they’ve crafted the cute gelato, complete with intricate details to capture the hippo’s charm. The gelato is hand-made using an Italian gelato machine, ensuring a smooth and creamy texture. Each piece requires at least 8 hours to set.

In addition to the Moo Deng-themed gelato, “Aroi” offers a wide variety of flavors, including Rum Raisin, Yogurt Blueberry, Hokkaido Milk, Vanilla, Strawberry, Lemon, Dark Chocolate, and the unique “Mae Klong Charm” flavor, made from coconut milk, local Samut Songkhram sea plant chakram, sugar, and jackfruit. Despite chakram’s slightly salty and astringent taste, it blends perfectly with the creamy sweetness of the coconut milk and jackfruit, creating a delightful combination. For health-conscious customers, the shop also offers stevia-sweetened ice cream.

Customers can visit “Aroi” located on Bypass Road behind Samut Songkhram Kindergarten School. The shop is open daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, except on Tuesdays. For more information or directions, contact 09-2552-1075.
