PHITSANULOK, 31 March 2012  – Passengers of a Bangkok-bound train experienced a life-threatening moment Friday evening as an engine carriage of the Chiang Mai-Bangkok Sprinter reportedly sent out black smoke while on its way to the capital.

A plume of black smoke quickly spread to the passenger carriage, as the train was pulling up at Bang Krathum Train Station in Phitsanulok province . The incident prompted an evacuation of more than 100 passengers to the platform for safety. It took the officials around 30 minutes to contain the fire.

The train resumed its service after the carriage that caught fire had been removed. The officials suspected extremely hot weather could cause the engine to overheat, leading to the blaze.
