WASHINGTON – India and the United States agreed on Thursday to initiate negotiations aimed at reaching a trade agreement swiftly and resolving tariff-related deadlocks. As part of the discussions, India pledged to increase its purchases of U.S. oil, natural gas, and weapons, while also committing to stricter measures against illegal immigration.
The two nations reached agreements on multiple issues, with details released following talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington, D.C. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that the resolution of trade disputes is expected to be finalized within the next seven months.
A joint statement issued after the meeting highlighted the U.S.’s appreciation of India’s efforts to reduce tariffs on certain American goods and expand market access for U.S. agricultural products. Both sides are working towards securing a preliminary trade agreement by this fall. (TNA)
