JAKARTA, Nov 8 – Indonesian authorities are racing to evacuate residents living around the erupting Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano on Flores Island in the eastern part of the country, which has been spewing ash clouds up to 8,000 meters high.

The local government of Flores Island reported that approximately 5,816 people have been evacuated so far, out of the more than 16,000 living in the danger zone near the volcano. These evacuees have been moved to nearby villages for safety.

Earlier this week, the volcano erupted violently, covering the area in volcanic ash and sending burning embers onto nearby homes, causing several fires. At least 10 people have been confirmed dead as a result of the eruption. Authorities are considering relocating some residents permanently from high-risk areas due to the ongoing volcanic threat.
