A recent earthquake in Indonesia was detected as far north as southern Thailand.

The magnitude 6.2 quake, whose epicenter was located on Sumatra Island, occurred on Sunday (25 Sep). Residents in Phuket, Phang Nga, and Songkhla provinces later reported feeling tremors from 500 to 550 kilometers away.

According to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), the quake – the third in seven days – struck at a depth of 40 kilometers and 535 kilometers from Phuket. So far, no earthquake-related injuries or deaths have been reported.

Although residents of Phuket and Phang Nga reported light tremors, residents of Songkhla’s high-rise buildings, particularly in the Sadao district near the Malaysian border, reported stronger ground vibrations.

Seismic activity in Southeast Asia has recently increased over the last three weeks. Last week’s earthquake in Taiwan prompted brief tsunami warnings. Two other quakes struck Chiang Mai and Papua New Guinea, causing minor structural damage. (NNT)
