Thai tourists are expected to take advantage of lifted COVID-related restrictions and travel overseas in record numbers during the New Year holidays, with Japan being one of their favorite destinations.
According to Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) governor Yutthasak Supasorn, the number of Thais traveling abroad has increased from around 28,000 per day from October 1-November 31 to 33,400 daily since December 21. Citing data from Booking.com, he said that Japan is the most popular destination for Thai tourists, followed by South Korea, Singapore, and Laos.
The data is in line with figures from the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), which indicated that the number of Thais entering Japan more than quadrupled from 7,622 in September to 52,100 in November, with total Thai arrivals soaring to 115,000 people.
According to TAT, the increase in international travel is due to the lifting of Covid-related regulations for the first time in three years, with Japan being a popular destination since visa requirements have been lifted and there are more direct flights to the country.
Tourism operators, meanwhile, expect that Japan will remain a popular destination for Thai tourists until the Songkran holidays in April. (NNT)
