An international news report highlighted Tomiko Itooka, a 116-year-old Japanese grandmother, who has become the oldest living person in the world, according to the Guinness World Records. She succeeded Maria Branyas Morera, a 117-year-old Spanish woman who passed away on August 19.
Born on May 23, 1908, Grandma Itooka, now living in a nursing home in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, was officially recognized as the oldest person on August 22, following the announcement of Branyas’ passing.
In an interview, Grandma Itooka expressed her gratitude for being honored with the title of the world’s oldest person. She revealed that she celebrated her birthday three months ago, receiving flowers, cake, and cards from the mayor. She also shared her simple secret to a long life, which involves drinking a popular yogurt-based drink called Calpis every morning, followed by her favorite fruit—bananas.
According to Guinness World Records, Grandma Itooka was born in Osaka and was an avid volleyball player in high school. She married at the age of 20 and had two daughters and two sons. After her husband’s passing in 1979, she moved into a nursing home. Remarkably, she recounted that at the age of 100, she climbed Mount Ontake, a 3,067-meter peak, not once but twice. Known for her love of long hikes, she surprised her fellow hikers by scaling the mountain in sneakers instead of hiking boots, leaving the guides both amazed and impressed.
Grandma Itooka’s story of longevity continues to inspire many around the world, showcasing that a healthy diet, simple pleasures, and an active lifestyle can contribute to a long, fulfilling life.
