CHONBURI, 17 June 2015 – Khao Kheow Open Zoo is inviting the general public to enjoy the pelicans, which have migrated to the zoo during the rainy season.
A large group of Spot-billed Pelicans were seen flocking to the reservoir of Khao Kheow Open Zoo’s Botanical Garden to catch small fish alongside the resident painted storks, forming a spectacular sight. The coexistence between the two groups of bird occurs yearly from June – August and can be found only at Khao Kheow Open Zoo.
Spot-billed Pelican or grey pelican is a type of large water bird. It can grow to a length of 140 centimeters. A Spot-billed Pelican has a large, expandable throat pouch which can scoop up fish from the surface of the water. The birds can be found in India, Eastern China, and Southeast Asian countries. Spot-billed Pelican is listed as an endangered species under Wild Animal Reservation and Protection Act, BE 2535.
