KHON KAEN – Authorities in the northeastern province of Khon Kaen are encouraging local farmers to grow crops that require only a small amount of water amid the ongoing drought.
Producers in Khon Kaen have been asked to switch from rice to asparagus as the province is faced with a water scarcity. According to authorities, farmers can generate an income of more than 100,000 baht per year growing and selling asparagus.
Officials from the Office of Agricultural Extension and Development Region 4 paid a visit to a 5-rai plantation where around 40 households are growing asparagus.
At the plantation, producers use sprinklers to provide irrigation to the vegetation. The sprinkler system helps the area save a large amount of water per year and works more effectively than other systems.
