BANGKOK, Thailand – The Foundation for the Promotion of Supplementary Occupations and Related Techniques, also known as the SUPPORT Foundation of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand, has organized a series of khon performances titled “Chakra Avatar,” one of the episodes in the Ramayana literary drama, to celebrate the 92nd Birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, 12 August 2024. These special performances will be held from 7 November to 8 December 2024, at the Main Hall of the Thailand Cultural Center, Bangkok.

Khon is a tradition style of dance and art dating from the Ayutthaya period. This form of dramatic art has its own unique identity incorporating different fields of the arts, literature, rituals, and crafts. It is a traditional form of entertainment that has been passed down from generation to generation.

Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother called for the revival of khon performances, which was beginning to decline in the previous century. Her Majesty expressed her wish for the preservation of this traditional performing art and instructed the creation of new khon costumes and accessories in accordance with the ancient style, while developing the art form in new ways, so that the younger generation would become more aware of the value of Thai arts.
