BANGKOK, 3 October 2013 The Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning has voiced support for the construction of high-speed rail, saying it will help develop urban areas and benefit the locals.

Director-General of the Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning Monthon Sudprasert said the department was responsible for city planning in the high-speed train project. The department has proposed that the areas surrounding the train stations be adjusted for systematic development in the future.

Mr Monthon expressed his confidence that the high-speed train system would profit the local people since it would bring up land prices and create new towns.

According to the director-general, the department has already sent its staff to educate the locals about land adjustment in many provinces, such as Nan, Yala, Suphan Buri and Phitsanulok.
