NARATHIWAT, 19 March 2013  Residents in Rueso district of Narathiwat are preparing to erect a statue of a beloved police officer who lost his life from an insurgent-planted bomb on 15 March.

Around 6,500 Muslim and Buddhist locals in Rueso sub-district municipality in Rueso district indicated they want to put up the the statue in memory of Police Lieutenant Colonel Chakkrit Wongphrommet, formerly the deputy superintendent of Rueso police station.

Ms. Thapani Khiriwong, the wife of Pol. Lt. Col. Chakkrit, said she was very touched by the locals’ plan and her husband would have been very happy if he knew.

Locals plan to place the life-sized statue of the deceased policeman next to the clock tower in Rueso municipality.

Reporters say the former deputy superintendent was known for starting work at 5 am every day. Locals are familiar with the sight of him heading out to do field work and not returning to the station until sunset. Reporters were also shown the unusual spots the policeman sat at to do his desk job, having relinquished his private, air-conditioned office to police investigators who needed to focus and be accurate when working on cases. The spots include a small corner in the police station that had a computer, tables in front of mom-and-pop shops, and stalls of vendors at the fresh market
