Bangkok – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is expediting the landscaping of the defunct Mahakan Fort community to prepare for a temporary public park that will open this month.

The transformation of Mahakan Fort, jointly run by the Environment Department and the Department of Public Works, involves building a garden, public restrooms and fences along the Ong Ang Canal, and renovating old buildings. The grounds have been raised by 50 – 80 centimeters, in order to lay drainage and lighting systems and build pedestrian walkways.

The Department of City Planning will put up signs introducing visitors to Mahakan Fort in Thai, English and Mandarin. The private sector has sponsored the construction of public restrooms. The park is expected to be completed in mid-June.

The Fine Arts Department and the BMA are considering whether the park should become a permanent public facility.
