The Marine Department is fast-tracking the development of passenger piers along the Chao Phraya River, with the aim of making them convenient, safe and modern in a bid to enhance public transportation services and cater to an increasing number of commuters and tourists.
Kritpetch Chaichuay, Inspector General of the Ministry of Transport and Acting Director-General of the Marine Department, disclosed the project’s progress in developing and renovating passenger piers along the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok and surrounding areas.
After the inauguration of the Rajinee-Bang Pho piers for the public earlier in 2023, the department plans to renovate additional piers and docking points, with over 10 locations already in progress. It has set a target for developing 3-4 Smart Piers annually out of a total of 29 piers. 13-14 piers have already been taken up, with the rest to be expedited.
Three piers, namely Rama 7 Pier, Tha Tien Pier, and Kiak Kai Pier, are expected to be completed in 2023. These improvements will emphasize safety, structural integrity, cleanliness and aesthetic appeal, contributing to an enhanced image for both locals and tourists. They are also expected to further boost the provision of public water transport services.
The development of all 29 passenger piers on the Chao Phraya River will further help alleviate road traffic congestion, reduce travel time and facilitate both water and land-based passengers. It will also enhance the quality of life for the public by providing convenience, speed, safety and efficiency.
Additionally, the Smart Pier system will feature route guidance for passengers, ramps for the disabled, smart restrooms that are clean and water-efficient, mobile phone charging stations, and free Wi-Fi. The aim is not only to facilitate travel, but also establish shared spaces that benefit the general public. (NNT)
