LAOS – Water levels in the Mekong River at Huay Xai, Bokeo Province, have dropped unusually fast following a dry spell, causing landslides along the riverbanks. The sudden drop has led to the collapse of riverside homes, restaurants, cafes, and scenic viewpoints, though fortunately, no injuries were reported.

According to a report from the Bokeo Provincial Radio Station, the incident occurred around 11 p.m. on the night of September 16. The landslide took place in Ban Yai, Huay Xai Tai, in Huay Xai District, where structures along the riverbank collapsed. Residents were able to evacuate their valuables in time, but the buildings suffered significant damage.

The cause of the landslide has been attributed to a sudden and abnormal drop in the Mekong River’s water level following a dry spell. Just a week prior, the area had experienced heavy rainfall, causing the river to swell and flood nearby homes, farmland, and livestock areas. As the water receded quickly, the unstable soil along the riverbank gave way, dragging down the structures built on top of it.
