BANGKOK, Thailand – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Economy and Society, Mr. Prasert Chanthararuongthong, provided an update on the ongoing discussions regarding the online gambling law, which is currently under review by the Cabinet. He stated that a working group, consisting of the Ministry of Digital Economy, Ministry of Interior, and the Office of the Council of State, had held two meetings but had not yet reached a conclusion. They are expected to meet one more time to finalize the details and draft the law. The Ministry of Interior is overseeing the online gambling bill, which will include various sections, including the application for licenses. The bill, which had been in place for several years, needs updates to address the rise of illegal online gambling, which has become widespread.
When asked whether the bill needs to go through the Cabinet, Mr. Prasert confirmed it would, but the exact process—whether it would be in the form of a Royal Decree or Ministerial Regulations—is still under consideration. While it is not yet clear whether online betting on sports like football and boxing will be included, he assured that underground gambling such as football betting will definitely be addressed. He further stated that he expects a draft of the law to be finalized by April, with discussions still ongoing. Once the draft is ready, it will undergo multiple processes before being presented to the Cabinet.
In addition, Mr. Prasert addressed the latest National Water Resources Committee (NWRC) meeting, where discussions centered on proactive measures to tackle drought and prepare for the upcoming rainy season. He emphasized the urgency to prepare for the late dry season in March-April and the potential for an early rainy season starting in May. The Ministry of Water Resources and relevant agencies have been tasked with ensuring water distribution for farmers, promoting drought-resistant crops, and addressing water shortages in areas outside irrigation zones, especially those prone to recurring droughts.
He also highlighted the government’s efforts to improve flood management for the 2023 rainy season, with measures being reviewed and approved, including the diversion of water from seven river basins. Mr. Prasert reassured the public that lessons had been learned from past years, ensuring a more proactive approach to disaster preparedness, such as early warnings to affected areas.
On the topic of budget proposals, he mentioned that the government is planning to request a special budget of 2-3 billion Baht to address the drought and flooding issues, though discussions with the Budget Bureau are still ongoing. The final figures will depend on the necessity and urgency of the funding required.
