BANGKOK – The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperative (MOAC) is promoting bamboo as a new economic plant for cultivation during the drought season to create sustainability.
The MOAC Minister Gen Chatchai Sarikulya has revealed that the ministry is about to introduce the cultivation of bamboos in Thailand, along with the initiation of bamboo processing industry and markets, to develop bamboos as another economic plant suitable for cultivation during the drought season.
He has said that the climate in Thailand is suitable for cultivating a variety of bamboo strains, while the plant itself can be used in many ways, including industrial and energy production. Bamboos require a short amount of cultivation time of 3 years, and consume less amount of water.
The MOAC Minister has added that the MOAC will work with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) to promote and provide training for farmers on bamboo cultivation in local areas, and will cooperate with the related agencies to develop the processing, trading, and investments related to bamboo.
