BANGKOK, 2 April 2015 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has ordered an urgent evacuation of Thais from Yemen after determining that the armed conflict in the country could intensify.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated on Wednesday that the evacuation procedure would be adjusted to suit the situation. Thai officials will be sent to Yemen to round up Thai students in risky locations and move them out of harm’s way, before they are returned to Thailand via chartered aircraft. Meanwhile, military transport aircraft of the Royal Thai Air Force will be prepared, in case it is necessary. More operations teams are also being prepared for dispatch to Yemen in the event that fighting there intensifies.
On Wednesday, the Thai embassy in Muscat, Oman urged Thais in Yemen to evacuate the country as soon as possible. They were also asked to keep their mobile phones close at hand around the clock.
Relatives of Thais in Yemen can make inquiries about the evacuation at the Department of Consular Affairs or by calling the Thai embassy in Muscat.
