Thailand denied entry of Miss Grand Myanmar Han Lay but did not arrest the woman who was requesting asylum in another country, according to the Immigration Bureau.
Media reported on Sept 22 that Han Lay was arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport after arriving from Vietnam because the Myanmar government already revoked her passport.
In the case, the Immigration Bureau said that Han Lay arrived at Bangkok Airport in the afternoon of Sept 22 and immigration police found that she did not carry a valid passport or travel document, so they denied her entry. Immigration police did not arrest her, the bureau said.
The Immigration Bureau was coordinating her departure with an airline while she contacted the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Thailand to apply for asylum in another country.
Last year the Myanmar government issued a warrant for the arrest of Han Lay for her speech during the Miss Grand International 2020 beauty pageant in Bangkok. Then the psychology student from Yangon University spoke of protests in Myanmar and asked the international community to help Myanmar people. (TNA)
