Pedestrians in Pattaya and Bangkok face daily risks as motorcycles invade footpaths, turning safe spaces into danger zones.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Pedestrians in Thailand, including major cities like Pattaya and Bangkok, face increasing challenges when using footpaths due to the prevalence of motorcycles violating traffic laws by riding or parking on sidewalks. While sidewalks are intended as safe spaces for pedestrians, the intrusion of motorcycles creates significant safety risks and inconveniences.

One major concern is the physical danger posed by motorcycles weaving through pedestrian areas. With motorcyclists disregarding the intended use of footpaths, there is a heightened risk of collisions, particularly in crowded areas where visibility is limited. This is especially concerning for children, the elderly, and those with mobility impairments who rely on footpaths for safe passage.

In addition to safety risks, motorcycles on sidewalks degrade the quality of pedestrian infrastructure. Many sidewalks, already narrow or uneven, are further obstructed by parked motorcycles, forcing pedestrians to step onto busy roads, increasing their vulnerability to accidents. In tourist-heavy areas like Pattaya, this issue also negatively impacts the city’s image as a welcoming destination.

The problem is not unique to Pattaya; it reflects a nationwide challenge. Despite existing laws prohibiting the use of sidewalks by motor vehicles, enforcement has often been inconsistent.

However, cities like Bangkok have begun using advanced technologies, such as AI-powered cameras, to detect violations and issue fines. Pattaya could consider adopting similar measures to curb these violations effectively.

Efforts to address this issue require a combination of stricter law enforcement, public education campaigns to foster respect for pedestrian rights, and investment in better sidewalk infrastructure. With these measures, Thailand can ensure safer and more accessible footpaths for both residents and tourists.
