While sidewalks are intended as safe spaces for pedestrians, the intrusion of motorcycles creates significant safety risks and inconveniences.
One major concern is the physical danger posed by motorcycles weaving through pedestrian areas. With motorcyclists disregarding the intended use of footpaths, there is a heightened risk of collisions, particularly in crowded areas where visibility is limited. This is especially concerning for children, the elderly, and those with mobility impairments who rely on footpaths for safe passage.
In addition to safety risks, motorcycles on sidewalks degrade the quality of pedestrian infrastructure. However, cities like Bangkok have begun using advanced technologies, such as AI-powered cameras, to detect violations and issue fines. Pattaya could consider adopting similar measures to curb these violations effectively.
Efforts to address this issue require a combination of stricter law enforcement, public education campaigns to foster respect for pedestrian rights, and investment in better sidewalk infrastructure. With these measures, Thailand can ensure safer and more accessible footpaths for both residents and tourists.
