PHUKET, Thailand – Authorities in Phuket are seeking expert consultation to investigate the cause of the recent landslides that killed 13 people, including two Russians and nine Myanmar nationals. The landslides, which occurred on August 23 in the Nak Kerd mountain range in Karon subdistrict, were triggered by continuous heavy rain and caused significant damage to nearby communities and tourist areas. Of the 19 people injured, 14 have already been discharged from the hospital.
Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat stated that the provincial office will request assistance from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment with surveying the affected area to determine the cause of the landslides. The incident also impacted the neighboring Rawai and Chalong subdistricts.
Residents have expressed concerns about construction on the mountain’s peak, including a large Buddha statue, which some believe may have contributed to the disaster. The development involved clearing trees, leaving the land exposed to erosion. Residents have petitioned authorities to investigate the project’s impact on the area.
The government is in contact with the Russian Consular Office and the Myanmar Embassy regarding the fatalities and will continue to provide support to the affected communities. (NNT)
