CAIRO, Egypt – The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs is celebrating the 70th anniversary of Thai-Egyptian diplomatic relations by promoting Muay Thai through a series of events in Cairo, Egypt, from September 24 to October 1, 2024. These activities, organized by the ministry in collaboration with the Royal Thai Embassy in Cairo, the International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA), and the Egyptian Muaythai Federation, aim to boost Muay Thai’s popularity in Egypt.
On September 28, a Muay Thai training session was conducted for over 200 participants, including youth, foreign Muay Thai athletes, and trainers. Led by renowned Thai boxing instructor, “Kru Din” (Wittawat Kasom), along with fellow instructors Kru Tumm (Anusorn Injai), I-aun (Patchayaporn Kasom), and Lacoste (Kitti Malang), the team taught traditional Muay Thai techniques, covering rituals like the Wai Kru, along with offensive moves like punches, kicks, knees, and elbows. The lessons followed IFMA’s internationally recognized standards.
Thanawat Sirikul, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Information at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that this initiative to teach Muay Thai is a key activity marking the 70th anniversary of Thai-Egyptian relations. The event received an overwhelmingly positive response, with over 200 participants joining the training. The Egyptian Muaythai Federation and IFMA played significant roles in encouraging participation, underscoring the mutual benefits of such initiatives for both nations.
The ministry aims to use Muay Thai to promote understanding and appreciation of Thai culture and values, such as respect for opponents and self-discipline, through its unique martial art. This effort supports the long-term goal of elevating Muay Thai to the global stage, including its inclusion in international competitions such as the Olympics. The ministry expressed gratitude to the private sector and IFMA for their support in organizing these events, which have already reached various regions, including Africa, North America, and the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.
Thailand and Egypt established diplomatic relations on September 27, 1954, making Egypt the first Arab country to form such ties with Thailand. The 70th anniversary in 2024 marks a significant milestone, reinforcing the longstanding and friendly relations between the two nations.
