Peaceful protest in Myawaddy: Locals rally against Thailand’s power and fuel export restrictions, calling for action from Myanmar authorities.

TAK, Thailand – A large group of Myanmar citizens gathered in Myawaddy to stage a protest in response to Thailand’s recent decision to cut electricity and halt fuel exports to Myanmar. The demonstration began at Mya Santi Park with about 30 people, and gradually grew as protesters marched through various streets in Myawaddy, including the roads leading to the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge.

The protesters, led by local activists, called on Myanmar authorities and the Karen Border Guard Force (BGF) to close 59 natural crossings and two official border checkpoints. These measures were in direct retaliation to the Thai government’s actions, which the protesters claim have severely impacted the daily lives of Myawaddy residents, especially in critical areas such as healthcare. Hospitals, in particular, have been facing significant difficulties due to the loss of electricity and fuel, essential for running medical equipment and providing care.

The protestors’ demands included the closure of the 59 informal crossing points along the border, as well as two key checkpoints – the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge at Myawaddy and another bridge in the area – to counteract the effects of Thailand’s restrictions.

The protest was peaceful, with Myanmar police and BGF soldiers providing security and facilitating the movement of demonstrators. The protesters have also planned to submit a formal letter to Myanmar’s relevant authorities and the BGF, outlining their grievances and demands. They emphasized that the closure of these crossings is necessary to pressure the Thai government to reconsider its measures, which have created serious shortages and challenges for residents in the area.

The rally reflects the growing tensions between the two countries as Myanmar faces economic and logistical difficulties due to Thailand’s decisions, leading to widespread discontent in border regions where cross-border trade and cooperation are vital for local economies. The situation remains tense, with both sides bracing for further developments in the coming days.
