BANGKOK, 12 March 2015 – The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) is proceeding with the impeachment motion against 250 former MPs who were involved in the illegal amendment of the previous charter.
NACC Secretary-General Sansern Poljiak revealed that the anti-graft agency has resolved to indict the 250 former MPs from the previous government for their approval of a charter amendment bill that would alter the Senate’s composition. He said the commissioners perceived the ex-parliamentarians’ vote on the bill as an abuse of their constitutional power and agreed that they should be subject to impeachment. If impeached, they would automatically receive a five-year political ban.
The NACC has categorized the accused into different groups based on the nature of their wrongdoing. Case files and evidence are being prepared and the agency is expected to begin submitting them to the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) for deliberation in the next 15 days.
Despite the NLA’s decision not to impeach 38 former senators over their passing of the same bill, NACC Commissioner Wichai Wiwitsewi insisted that the impeachment case against the 250 former MPs is different in context.
Meanwhile, the NACC has also received a piece of information suggesting that some of the then-MPs were casting votes for each other, which would be considered a criminal violation. The agency is working to investigate the matter.
