BANGKOK, 23 December 2014 – Those living along Nakhon Si Thammarat’s coastline have become severely afflicted by intense sea waves which have destroyed a number of homes.

Amid the intense storm surge, fishermen in Pak Phanang district have moved their fishing boats onto higher ground inside their villages to prevent damage. Many homes on the coastline have been chipped away by the sea waves, while some suffered total destruction. Officials have been trying to remove sand from the surface of coastal roads, which has been swept up from the beach by the storm winds. Trash on the beach and in the sea has also been blown onto the road. Officials were also seen erecting sea walls made of large stones in some places along the coast.

In the meantime, the 4th Army Area commanding-general, Lieutenant General Prakan Chonlayut, has banned military aircraft use through Wednesday because of the hazardous weather. Military activities in the South will be facilitated primarily by land transportation for the time being. The ban has been issued in light of an emergency landing of an ISOC’s helicopter in a rubber plantation on Sunday that injured four soldiers.
