BANGKOK, 9 September 2015 – The National Legislative Assembly has acknowledged receipt of a report suggesting the setting up of a new committee in charge of the country’s forest policy, which is aimed at finding sustainable solutions to forestland problems.
The NLA sitting on Tuesday, which was chaired by Vice President Surachai Liengboonlertchai, discussed possible solutions for the country’s forestland issues, proposed by the committee overseeing national resources and the environment.
Committee Chairman, Admiral Wallop Kerdphol told the assembly that due to a high rate of deforestation as a result of land encroachment in various national forest reserves, more measures will have to be introduced to control such intrusions and to mitigate any risk to the country’s forest resources in a sustainable manner.
Therefore, the committee has proposed the setting up of a national forest policy committee to work on the improvement of all related policies and to write a national master plan on the development of Thai forests.
Most NLA members gave support to the calls for more active solutions and the proposed setting up of the new committee, before the session ended with a resolution to accept the committee’s report which will now be passed on to the government for consideration.
