BANGKOK, Thailand – The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has approved the implementation of a cell broadcast system for disaster alerts by two major mobile operators, Advanced Info Services (AIS) and True Corporation. The decision, announced on September 17, follows successful trials conducted by both companies earlier this year.

The cell broadcast system will enable the transmission of text messages accompanied by audible alerts to all mobile users within the coverage area of the operators’ cell towers, eliminating the need for a special app. Trairat Viriyasirikul, acting secretary-general of the NBTC, said both companies are in the process of installing additional cell towers, which are expected to be operational by the fourth quarter of this year.

To incentivize AIS and True for their participation in this emergency alert initiative, the NBTC will reduce their Universal Service Obligation contributions for three years. However, specific details regarding the operators’ financial savings have not been disclosed. The NBTC is awaiting further information before approving a similar system proposed by the state-run National Telecom company.

In addition to mobile alerts, the NBTC plans to test an emergency warning system via digital terrestrial television through the Royal Thai Army’s Channel 5, enhancing public safety measures in response to natural disasters and other emergencies. (NNT)
