BANGKOK, Thailand – The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has announced its plans to restore communication services in flood-affected areas within 24 hours after floodwaters recede. The agency is working closely with local authorities and mobile network operators to address urgent communication issues and prevent disruptions in areas vulnerable to flooding, particularly in northern provinces such as Chiang Rai and along the Mekong River.
NBTC Acting Secretary-General Trairat Viriyasirikul stated that measures have been implemented to repair communication systems affected by damaged power infrastructure. Mobile vehicles are deployed, fuel is delivered to base stations, and backup power systems are restored to ensure continued service. The NBTC also coordinates efforts to expand coverage in low-water areas as part of the restoration process.
In addition to the restoration efforts in already affected areas, the NBTC is preparing for potential flooding in Loei’s Chiang Khan district and nearby areas along the Mekong River. These preparations include ensuring backup generators are ready and deploying mobile communication vehicles to maintain service continuity during possible future floods.
The NBTC is closely monitoring disaster updates from the Department of Disaster Mitigation and the Department of Irrigation, sharing real-time information with network operators to ensure timely problem-solving. The agency is also coordinating with amateur radio networks to support disaster warnings and provide critical information to rescue teams in flood-hit regions. (NNT)
