New Year road death toll reaches 86

BANGKOK, Dec 29 — A total of 866 road accidents have claimed 86 lives and resulted in 885 injuries over the first two of seven dangerous days of the New Year holiday, according to the Road Safety Centre.

Probation Department chief Ruenwadee Suwanmongkol told a press briefing that on Saturday (Dec 28) alone, 47 people were killed and 486 others injured in 474 road accidents, explaining that most accidents resulted from drunk driving, followed by excessive speeding.

Chaiyaphum, Bung Kan, Rayong and Samut Songkhram were the only accident-free provinces.

Meanwhile, Nakhon Si Thammarat recorded the highest number of accidents at 35 as well as the largest number of injuries at 37.

Ayutthaya saw the highest number of fatalities at 5
