The National Health Security Office (NHSO) is expanding its telemedicine service to Thai nationals living abroad under the universal health scheme. Launched on January 17, the service provides primary healthcare access to Thais overseas, with recent efforts concentrated on the 20,000-strong Thai community in Singapore.
During a recent visit to Singapore, NHSO officials provided detailed information about the service to Thai nationals. They outlined how the program can reduce medical costs, save time, and decrease the need for hospital visits. A survey among 54 Thai worker volunteers revealed that many respondents, especially those over 50, regularly experience minor illnesses. However, numerous individuals face barriers such as high medical expenses and communication challenges when accessing healthcare.
The survey also identified a need for mental health services within the telemedicine program, as many Thais living abroad experience anxiety related to cultural differences and work-related stress. The expansion of telemedicine addresses these issues by providing more comprehensive healthcare support to Thai expatriates. (NNT)
