CHIANG RAI, Thailand – On the occasion of Myanmar’s Independence Day, 151 Thais who had been lured into working for call center scams were released after serving partial sentences and receiving pardons, January 4. However, the four detained Thai fishermen remain in custody.
Pol. Gen. Thatchai Pitanilabutr, National Police Inspector General and Director of the Cybercrime Prevention Center, traveled to Chiang Rai to receive the released individuals at the Second Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge at around 1:00 PM.
Reports indicate that the 151 Thai nationals had entered Myanmar illegally, lured by fraudulent job offers for call center work. After being arrested by Myanmar authorities and serving part of their sentences, they were granted clemency. Unfortunately, the release did not include the four Thai fishermen who remain detained in Myanmar. Further updates on their status are awaited. (TNA)
