NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, Aug 19 – About 1,600 officials have been deployed to control forest fire in this southern province in an attempt to put out the fire within three days.

Wirote Jirarangsan, the province’s governor on Sunday visited officials and distributed necessities.

About 1,600 officials from the Royal Forest Department and soldiers from the fourth Army Region were deployed to control the fire in five districts.

They aim to extinguish the forest fire within three days, by using helicopters to pinpoint hotspots.

According to a report on Friday, forest fires in five districts have damaged 15,000 rai (6,000 acres) so far, including 600 rai of a 1,900 rai forest reserve whose ecology is being studied by the Chaipattana Foundation, under royal patronage.

Artificial rainmaking to help control the fire cannot be done due to low humidity.
