BANGKOK, Thailand -The 29th National Book Fair has kicked off with overwhelming enthusiasm, attracting over 300,000 readers in just the first three days, October 13. Held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center from October 10-20, the event has drawn book lovers from Thailand and abroad, eager to meet renowned authors and discover new literary treasures.
A highlight of the fair is the appearance of internationally acclaimed authors, including Jiu Lu Fei Xiang, China’s queen of romantic fantasy fiction. Known for her works such as Invincible Earth, Demon’s Slave, and Heavenly Fated Husband, her novels have been adapted into popular TV series. Fei Xiang made her first-ever appearance in Thailand to launch her new book Master, Please Guide Me, a collection of six romantic fantasy short stories filled with love, sorrow, unrequited passion, and her signature humor. The book is set to be adapted into a TV series, further exciting her Thai fanbase.
Also in attendance was Mikito Shinen, Japan’s celebrated crime novelist famous for The Murder of 1,000 Cranes and The Tower of Glass Murders. Shinen shared insights from his journey from being a doctor to becoming a writer, revealing the inspirations behind his intricate plotlines. His session was warmly received by Thai readers, who appreciated the rare opportunity to engage with a master of the genre.
Korean author Kim Ho Yeon, best known for Togko’s Unconvenient Store, took the stage to discuss his creative process, alongside Professor Dr. Peter A. Jackson, author of Capitalism Magic Thailand, which explores modern mysticism in Thai culture. Indonesian author Ratih Kumala, whose book Cigarette Girl is set to be adapted into a series on a major streaming platform, also captivated audiences with her personal writing journey.
The book fair, supported by Thailand’s Department of Cultural Promotion and organized by the Publishers and Booksellers Association of Thailand (PUBAT), is set to continue until October 20, featuring over 100 activities, including exhibitions, workshops, and exclusive book releases. Promotions from various publishers, including discounts, giveaways, and limited-edition items, have further boosted the excitement of the event.
Suvit Rungwattanapiboon, President of PUBAT, expressed his delight at the strong turnout, noting that it reflects the sustained growth of Thailand’s reading culture and book market. He emphasized the importance of the fair in connecting readers with authors from around the world and showcasing Thailand’s vibrant literary scene.
