BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is set to chair a Cabinet meeting in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai provinces later this year to strengthen public confidence and boost the local economy. The decision comes after the prime minister led the second 2024 meeting of the Flood, Storm, and Landslide Disaster Relief Operations Center, where she commended agencies and volunteers for their work in addressing flood and landslide challenges in Chiang Rai. The meeting discussed long-term strategies for managing recurring natural disasters, focusing on faster recovery and enhanced preparedness.
The committee reviewed the progress of flood recovery efforts, including water management and landslide prevention strategies. Discussions touched on cooperation with Myanmar on water management and updates on operations in Chiang Rai. The agenda covered financial compensation for flood victims and amendments to disaster relief regulations, with further plans extending into 2025.
Paetongtarn also directed all related agencies to closely monitor flooding and landslide risks in southern Thailand. The Disaster Relief Center has been tasked with assessing the needs of affected areas, securing adequate budgets for essential equipment and tools, and finalizing compensation regulations, all of which are expected to be concluded by 2025.
